2012 SAATCHI GALLERY/SUNDAY TELEGRAPH ART PRIZE FOR SCHOOLS SHORTLISTING SUCCESS

The work of a talented A level art student from Bishop's Stortford College has been shortlisted from over 13,000 entries for the prestigious 2012 Saatchi Gallery/Sunday Telegraph Art Prize for Schools.

Florence Koch from Bishop's Stortford produced Spiral, a series of three ceramic pieces loosely based on eggs, for her A level coursework. She created a number of initial drawings, by hand and on the computer, which formed the basis for the developmental stage. She was then encouraged to explore thrown ceramics on the potter's wheel and this lead to her trying out new techniques and working closely with the College Artist in Residence Chris Sutherland. Her sketchbook also included a related study on the artist Tony Cragg.

Florence is now studying International Fashion Marketing at Manchester Metropolitan University after gaining A levels in Art, History and Psychology last summer.

Spiral will be exhibited from 16 - 23 April 2013 at The Saatchi Gallery in London, when the winner and two runners will be announced.

The competition, which is open to any budding artist aged 18 or younger, anywhere in the world, had entries from 22 countries. The winning pupil will receive £2,000, with £10,000 going to the art department of his or her school. The panel of judges for the 2012 Saatchi Gallery/ Sunday Telegraph Art Prize for Schools was: the artist Martin Maloney, the illustrator, Axel Scheffler, Alistair Hicks, Deutsche Bank art advisor and curator, Alastair Smart, arts editor of The Sunday Telegraph, and Rebecca Wilson, director, Saatchi Gallery.
