Silver Medal for Godolphin's Sophie Merritt

Published by Godolphin, Salisbury on Thursday 15th of August 2013

Following on from her success at the ESAA National Athletics Championships, where she won gold in the shot putt, and a place in the England team, Sophie Merritt won a silver medal at the Aviva Schools International athletics meeting held in Dublin recently.

Sophie was beaten only by a Great Britain international who is 18 months older than she is. It was a baking hot day and Sophie held her focus exceptionally well. Sophie's achievement is all the more outstanding bearing in mind she lost around four months training earlier in the year, due to injury, and only returned to training in June. She is also one of the youngest England Team members.

At Sophie's first meeting back after recovering from her injuries, held in June in Portsmouth, she won the A string shot in a Wessex League record of 11.63m and the A string discus in a personal best and Wessex League record distance of 42.05m
