Prior Park Win Avon County Championship

Published on isbi School News dated Thursday 17th of October 2013

Prior Park College Girls' 1st Hockey Squad played outstandingly well at the County Tournament in Bristol on Tuesday to continue their very successful and unbeaten season. The pressure was on the Bath team to perform well, defending their Avon Champion's title and having beaten the reigning National Schools' Champions Dean Close last Thursday.

Bristol Grammar School were very strong and keen to deny Prior the luxuries of time or space resulting in a hard fought 0-0 draw. Prior Park then found their flow beating Clifton High 8-0 and King Edward's School 2-0. Kingswood beat Colston's and Bristol Cathedral School to meet Prior Park in the semi-final for a typically tough Bath battle. Prior Park had to play creative hockey, moving the ball quickly as Kingswood were keen to capitalise on any opportunities or errors. Prior Park's sustained pressure and possession saw them score in each half to secure their place in the final.

Clifton College won a very competitive City Derby of a semi-final over Bristol Grammar school to face Prior Park in the final. Clifton took the lead in the first half with a very well executed penalty flick and both teams were fighting fatigue having played over 2 hours of high octane hockey by this point. However, Prior Park dug deep and produced some fabulous patterns of play to score 2 stunning goals, finishing the day as worthy winners of a very competitive tournament.

Prior Park will represent Bath and Avon in the next round of the National Schools' Competition on Thursday 7 November at Millfield School. The Regional Final will see the Champions and Runners-up from all 7 counties of the West of England compete for 2 places in the National Schools' Final.
