On 15 November, two Oundle teams competed in the Royal Society of Chemistry Regional Top of Bench Competition hosted at the Perse School, Cambridge. Oundle 'A' team comprising Alexander Wienand (15), James Chapman (15), Rebecca Siddall (13) and Ben Hutchinson (13) -achieved an impressive second place, just pipped to the post by the Perse 'A' team. A total of 18 teams took part, with Oundle 'B' also finishing in the top ten, with a creditable 6th place.
Alexander commented, 'The first practical got underway with James proving particularly useful in the calculations. The second practical involved ions - a few excellent deductions and good knowledge led us through this one with ease.'
The quiz that followed included everything from fireworks to Osmium. Oundle 'A' team only lost marks in 5 of the questions and managed to be the first team to complete the number puzzle.
Alexander concluded, 'The scores were close and we were satisfied with 2nd place: a good effort all round.'
Chemistry teacher, Robin Hammond concluded, 'Both teams performed admirably and entered into the spirit of this event. They worked well in teams of four in answering the two practical tasks set and then in the 40 question Chemistry quiz. All eight pupils were a credit to Oundle School and I hope that they took away a great deal from the afternoon.'
