Birkdale School's enterprise club BirkdaleInc.,poweredbyus has achieved another milestone in its business development. In a ceremony, held during school assembly on January 28th, the directors of Young Empire, one of the first enterprise companies to be established within the club, were delighted to present a cheque for £7000 to Kelly Thomas, representing the Board of Directors from Global Ethics.Global Ethics is a UK registered charity, working to support some of the poorest communities in Africa. The money will be used to fund a Playpump for a remote village in Malawi. The Playpump will bring clean drinking water to a school of over 1200 students, allowing them to go to school rather than walk for water.
BirkdaleInc.,poweredbyus will be able to join the league of over a hundred national and global companies that have built Playpumps throughout Africa.
This comes in the same week as receiving the Badge of Honour, a very prestigious enterprise accolade during the Global Entrepreneurship Week.
It all began three and a half years ago when five enterprising pupils entered into the Global Ethics, One Water national enterprise challenge with a business idea that won them first place and set them on course to being one of the first secondary schools in the country to team up with big business and begin generating profits to fund the Playpump.
In the following year they continued to expand their business by developing four new Malawi based product lines, placing them first in the follow-up One Big Idea national enterprise challenge.
The club now boasts over twelve business start-ups with several currently trading in the commercial marketplace. The group over the last three years have won over twelve national and regional enterprise challenges including 'Most Enterprising School Environment' in the country by EnterpriseUK during the Peter Jones TENNER Challenge awards ceremony last summer.
