Clean sweep in County Netball Championships

Published on isbi School News dated Wednesday 26th of February 2014

On Wednesday 12 February, Oundle's U15 netballers were victorious at the County Netball Tournament at Northampton High School scoring 113 goals and only conceding 25 - winning all of their 8 games.

Captain, Ruby Goodall (15) commented, 'The day commenced with Oundle's first match against the host school Northampton High. We knew it was important to play well and to take control of the match from the very start due to the short amount of time each match lasted. At half time we were ahead and were now beginning to settle into our game and play together as a team. We won this first match 15-3 and were determined to keep up this level of performance.'

The next few matches continued to go well with a variety of combinations of Oundle players working well together. Oundle's attackers played a strong game and had a lot of possession. Lucy Baker (14) especially performed well both as Wing Attack and Goal Attack, obtaining many interceptions, creating goal scoring opportunities and managing the transition between roles very well.

Oundle beat Brooke Weston (16-5), Campion (13-2), Pitsford (11-6), Quinton (11-6), Sponne (14-4) and Weavers (23-0).

Ruby added, 'After these comfortable wins, our first real challenge came against Wellingborough who were a stronger side than most of the other teams. After going behind in the first half Oundle we were determined to bring it back. Some good work in defence especially from Georgie Harrison (15) enabled us to turn the game around and start to have more possession of the ball. The final score of this match was 6-5 to Oundle in what was a close but well fought game.

At the end of the tournament we were rewarded for our play throughout the day with a 1st place and therefore crowned county champions. Player of the tournament was Lucy Baker, who played consistently well throughout all matches and played a key part in the success of the Oundle attacking side.'

Head of Netball, Bev Burnham commented, 'This squad shows tremendous potential; some of these pupils will be representing the School at the National finals in the U16 squad. The netball club definitely has a bright future.'
