Caterham School Student Wins Silver Medal in British Mathematics Olympiad

Published by Caterham School on Wednesday 2nd of March 2011

Caterham School Sixth Form student Ange Zhou has been awarded a Silver Medal in the first round of the British Mathematics Olympiad. She took the three and a half hours exam, which consisted of six complex problems requiring full written solutions, in early December but only received the results this week. She was ranked 28th out of about 1000 students and was awarded a Silver Medal and a book (Introduction to Number Theory) for her excellent work.

In the previous round, the United Kingdom Senior Mathematical Challenge, Ange achieved 'Best in School' and was awarded a Gold certificate.

She also received good news last week when she discovered that she has been offered a place at Magdalene College, Cambridge to read Maths.

Headmaster Julian Thomas said: 'The School has a reputation for high academic standards across all subjects and, of course, Maths has been a traditional strength. Ange is an outstanding mathematician and a pleasure to have in the School; this recognition is thoroughly deserved. She follows in a long line of Caterham mathematicians who have performed with distinction in this event.'
