Bedales celebrates Oxbridge seven

Published on isbi School News dated Tuesday 27th of January 2015

Seven Bedales students are celebrating after receiving offers to study at the universities of Oxford and Cambridge for courses in the sciences, art, and humanities; four of the students attended Bedales Prep School, Dunhurst before progressing to Bedales Senior School and Sixth Form.

Peter Price has been offered a place at Corpus Christi, Cambridge, to read English; Poppy Duncan has been offered a place at New College, Oxford, to study Medicine; Juliette Perry's offer is to study Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Somerville, Oxford; and Chloe Green has received an offer to study Chemistry at Worcester College, Oxford.

Having achieved their desired grades last summer, three Bedales students have unconditional offers to start their degrees in September. Olivia Brett has been offered a place at Clare College, Cambridge, to read Theology and Religious Studies, having achieved a D2 (equivalent to A*) in Music Pre-U, and two A*s in French and Religious Studies in her A Levels last year. Olivia has secured a part singing for The Black Cat Opera Company as Nannetta in Verdi's Falstaff in the Camberley Theatre this summer. Before her year out comes to an end she also hopes to visit the Middle East for an archaeological dig.

Last year's head boy Rufus Rock has been offered a place at Brasenose, Oxford, to study Fine Art having achieved A*s in Art & Design, History and Mathematics, and an A in English Literature in his A Levels last summer. Since October, he has been taking a six month practical filmmaking course in Berlin and whilst living there has also been learning German.

Joshua Grubb has been offered a place to study Biochemistry at Somerville, Oxford, having achieved an A* in Biology, a D2 in Music Pre-U, and two As in Chemistry and Physics in his A Levels last summer. Joshua is currently completing the 'Year in Industry' scheme with Procter and Gamble at the Newcastle Innovation Centre, working in the science research labs. He says: 'I highly recommend the scheme to anyone interested in doing sciences at university. It has given me some real hands on experience in a scientific context, and also a clearer perspective on the course that I want to do at university afterwards.' Last year, Joshua was also awarded a Distinction in his Diploma (Dip.ABRSM) Clarinet examination.

In addition to the Oxbridge offers, Bedales students have received offers from other leading universities and colleges including Bristol, Durham, Bath, Warwick, Exeter, University College London, Southampton, Newcastle, and King's College London to study a variety of courses including Classics, Archaeology and Anthropology, Physics and Philosophy, Marine Biology, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Management, Law, Computer Science, Ancient History, and Architecture.

Commenting on these offers, Keith Budge, Headmaster of Bedales School, said:

'Congratulations to Bedales students on an impressive array of offers this year. We aim to foster inquisitiveness and an independence of mind in students which helps them to stand out in the highly competitive university admissions process. This enables the vast majority of Bedales sixth formers to progress to their first choice university.'
