Bishop's Stortford College Cricket Tour

Published on isbi School News dated Tuesday 28th of April 2015

Bishop's Stortford College 1st XI headed to Cape Town, South Africa during the Easter Holidays for a 10 day pre-season cricket tour.

18 boys had the opportunity to test themselves against strong opposition during the tour and from the seven games played the College won 3 matches, tied 1 and lost 3 overall.

Beginning with training sessions at Milnerton CC, the tour included all-day and T20 matches against the All Rounder Cricket Academy at Cape Town CC and representative sides playing at Pinelands CC. They also played at the Vineyard Oval; one of the most prestigious grounds in Cape Town with a spectacular view of Table Mountain. The team won both of their T20 matches against the Newlands Cricket School while playing there, making a fantastic day of cricket.

Matches aside, they all had a fantastic time. The team took in some breath-taking views from the top of Table Mountain (having walked all the way up) and the Cape of Good Hope. They visited Robben Island, saw the cell Nelson Mandela was held in and had a tour from an ex-political prisoner which everyone found very moving. They also enjoyed a guided tour around the famous Newlands cricket ground and the impressive Sports Science Institute of South Africa, and became very familiar with some local ostriches!

College Head of Cricket Matt Drury said: "The tour was a great success and provided valuable preparation for the school season. The boys learned a lot about South Africa and the important role that sport plays for young people growing up in Cape Town. Getting the chance to play cricket overseas and visit such a wonderful city hopefully makes memories that will last for a long time."
