Jason Gardener MBE, Olympic Gold Medallist (2004) and President Elect of UK Athletics was welcomed by Headmaster, James Murphy-O'Connor this afternoon, as the Bury Sports Centre was officially opened with a large group of parents and friends in attendance. The Headmaster thanked all those many people who had contributed to make the Sports Centre a reality including the Governors, staff, parents and donors. Governor and major donor Mr Tony Bury came in for special mention for his generosity, with the Sports Centre bearing his name as a result. Both the Headmaster and Jason spoke of the central role that sport had played in their lives, their passion for it and the benefits they gained from it. Jason commented: "It was an honour to open the fantastic Bury Sports Centre at Prior Park College. These world-class facilities without doubt will enhance the student and wider community experience. I personally know how the lessons learnt through sport can raise standards on the sports field and in the classroom. It is clear to see the commitment and investment in sport from the Headmaster James Murphy O'Connor and the Governors who totally understand the benefits and value too." Lord Sebastian Coe who had intended to join the celebration, sent his apologies and best wishes.
