St Leonards School is embarking on a major redevelopment of its junior section, St Leonards-New Park.

Parents have been told of a £2.5m project which will result in enhanced facilities for the St Andrews primary school, which currently caters for 168 boys and girls aged 4 to 12.

The redevelopment, funded by the New Park Educational Trust and designed by Morris and Steedman Associates, will see the existing Early Years wing demolished and replaced by a brand new, state of the art building and Hepburn House, which accommodates Years (P) 4-7, refurbished.

A number of new classrooms will be provided, as well as a new hall, a new reception area, new offices and new activity areas, in addition to new lavatories and cloakrooms.

Building work will commence at the end of the month (June) and is due to be completed in time for the start of the 2012 academic year.

The junior section will also be moving forwards with a new name of St Leonards Junior School, with the redeveloped area within the St Leonards campus to be known as New Park.
Andrew Donald, Headmaster of St Leonards-New Park, said, 'I'm delighted that this exciting project is now getting under way. It will be a very exciting new building when it's finished and will provide all the facilities which we would want.
'The new building will be a wonderful addition to the Junior School and to the whole of St Leonards.
'I'd like to acknowledge the wonderful generosity of the New Park Educational Trust, without which it would not be possible.
'I'm very, very pleased that the name of New Park will continue in the new site and this is a fitting acknowledgement of its place in the history of both the Junior School and St Andrews.'

Martin Passmore, Chairman of the New Park Educational Trust, said, 'The New Park Educational Trust is delighted to be providing all of the funds to redevelop the Junior School at St Leonards.
'In this, it is not only continuing the legacy of the former New Park School, but it is enhancing the excellent facilities that already exist at St Leonards.'
Dr Michael Carslaw, Headmaster of St Leonards School, is delighted that the most significant building project since his arrival just over three years ago is about to take place.
'This is a huge milestone in the development of St Leonards, and will provide state of the art facilities for our junior children,' he said.

'The renaming of St Leonards-New Park as St Leonards Junior School represents the bringing together of St Leonards as one.

'Morris and Steedman have produced a fantastic design which will serve St Leonards well for years to come.'
