Congratulations to OSH pupil Kelvin Coker, who has been awarded a prize in Worcester Cathedral’s King John Portrait Exhibition. 12 year old Kelvin, who is in Year 8, was placed third in the Under 18 competition and received £25 in GreatArt vouchers. The exhibition was part of a series of events to mark the 800th anniversary of King John’s death and his burial at Worcester Cathedral. Kelvin’s contemporary double portrait comprises a 3D mask and painting. Commenting on his achievement, OSH Head of Art Mrs Emily Pincher said: “I am delighted for Kevin who spent many hours creating his piece during Art Club, which is one of the many co-curricular activities available at OSH. “I really didn’t expect to win a prize and look forward to spending the vouchers on some art material.” Said Kelvin. “I am so happy that my painting has been seen by so many people in such a magnificent cathedral.” The judges, Sara Hayward RCA, Francesca Currie (portrait artist) and Philip Leach (Actor, playing King John in Shakespeare’s King John), found it difficult to choose between the 60 portraits forming part of the exhibition. “There was a very high standard of entries” said artist and Cathedral Education Officer Sara Hayward RCA. “The winners in each category really stood out, getting to grips with King John’s unique and difficult character. They also showed exceptional handling of media and visitors will see portraits in oils, water colours, collage.”
