Published on isbi School News dated Tuesday 19th of July 2011

An adventure story set in the Fens has been chosen by a top writer of supernatural fiction as the winning entry in a literary competition at Wisbech Grammar School.

In the John Gordon Short Story Competition, which is now in its second year, the author of 15 fantasy novels, who is a past pupil of Wisbech Grammar School, selected an entry by Richeldis France (12) from the stories that were submitted by all the members of year seven.

John Gordon, who served in the Royal Navy during the Second World War on minesweepers and destroyers, said: 'It's been another stimulating exercise reading the stories. They covered everything from the Second World War to vampires, displaying a wide range of imagination and ideas.

'Once again it has been very difficult to choose a winner, but I eventually decided on the entry by Richeldis. This story was well constructed, very well told and with a very touching and satisfying ending.'

Richeldis was due to be presented with a signed copy of 'The house on the Brink' by John Gordon, which was inspired by the National Trust property, Peckover House, and a book token at an assembly on Wednesday, July 6.

She said: 'I am so pleased I won this competition. My family and friends are so proud of me.'
