Kid's Lit Quiz shows Box Hill School students interest in fiction books

Published on isbi School News dated Tuesday 6th of December 2011

On Tuesday 29th November Box Hill School entered the international 'Kids' Lit Quiz' for the third year running. We did not come back with any trophies but I know we all felt privileged to have been part of such an amazing event. It took place in a beautiful venue, but what most struck us was the fantastic buzz of excitement from all our children about authors, books and reading.

The top-hatted Quizmaster, Wayne Mills, who founded the Kids' Lit Quiz ten years ago, is a truly inspirational man, who was awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit in the Queen's New Year's Honours List 2011 for his services to education.. He is absolutely passionate about 'the sport of reading' and his enthusiasm is infectious.

Our teams comprised Anna Gibbs, Ed Wilkinson, Rowan Aldridge, Adam Ling, Olivia Jones, Stephen Godfrey, Kayleigh Elias and Toby Fraser. There were many excellent teams entered and the competition was fierce. It was great to see the students in action there was not a lot that they didn't know about fiction books, past and present. In the half-time break there was great excitement as our students had the chance to meet the visiting authors (Ian Beck, Karen Mahoney, Damian Dibben and Lindsay Barraclough), purchase their books and have them signed.

The students thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Olivia Jones said 'Kids' Lit Quiz was pretty awesome! There was a really nice atmosphere and, since the quiz I've been putting down my magazines and picking up books!'. Adam Ling said 'The event was jolly good and quite fun. It was nice just to answer some questions, and the recommended books sounded good.'

If this has whetted your appetite for reading why not give one of the quizmaster's recommended books a try:
'Elsewhere' by Gabrielle Zevin
'Bootleg' by Alex Shearer
'Ender's Game' by Orson Scott Card
'Keeper' by Mal Peet
