Mayfield School celebrates prestigious engineering scholarship awards

Published by Mayfield School on Monday 20th of December 2021

Mayfield Sixth Form students, Christina and Elizabeth, have both been awarded prestigious Arkwright Engineering Scholarships for their innovative design projects aimed at making a real difference to all our lives.

Arkwright scholarships are awarded to inspire potential future leaders in engineering. The girls had to go through a rigorous selection process involving submitting a detailed proposal for their projects.

Christina, currently in the Lower Sixth at Mayfield, is engineering solutions to help reduce coastal erosion. Her research is focused on the ways in which building infrastructures on the sea bed can help dissipate the energy of waves as they hit the coast, by simulating the impact in a wave machine using a variety of shapes created with a 3D printer. Christina is studying Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Further Maths at A-level and hopes to pursue a career in Engineering.

Elizabeth, also in her first year of A-levels, won her Scholarship for her project aimed at reducing cot deaths. She is creating a tiny computer component that can be sewn into a baby grow and measures the temperature and orientation of a baby whilst sleeping. Alerts can be sent to a phone in the event of a problem. Elizabeth, who is studying Maths, Further Maths, Physics and History, said “I’m very excited to have been awarded an Arkwright Scholarship and am looking forward to learning more about software engineering as a career with my sponsor. I’d love to work in the renewable energy sector in the future.”

As part of the scholarship the girls are being sponsored by Ward & Burke Construction Ltd and tlmNexus, a technology company based in Brighton. Support is offered in various different ways, through valuable hands-on work experience, support for their project and a personal mentor who can help them with their studies as well as career planning.

Mayfield’s Head of Physics, Dr Darragh Corvan, said, “We are delighted Christina and Elizabeth have been recognised for their outstanding work. The Arkwright Engineering Programme is the most prestigious scholarship of its type in the UK. At Mayfield, we encourage all our students to pursue their passions and we actively encourage girls to study STEM subjects and pursue careers in engineering, which have traditionally been male dominated. We aim to break the stereotype by providing support and a range of activities and projects to support the girls’ learning within an environment in which it’s encouraged to experiment and make mistakes, as this is how we learn best.”

These girls follow Mayfield Upper Sixth pupils, Valeria and Victoria, from Crowborough, who were awarded an Arkwright Scholarship last year. The School’s alumnae are strongly represented within STEM careers - including aeronautical engineering, construction and Formula 1 racing - and are excellent role models for the current pupils, supporting them with careers advice and mentoring.
