Music, Music And More Music!

Published by Lichfield Cathedral School on Wednesday 27th of April 2022

End of Michaelmas Term 2021 into the start of this term. It was an absolute joy that so much live music making was able to happen throughout, but particularly towards the end, of Michaelmas. December 8th marked our final ‘Wednesday at 1pm’ concert of the Michaelmas Term with solos from the following four students: Home from ‘Wonderland’ performed by Daisy A (Voice) Daisy joined LCS in Year 6 and has been singing from 4 years of age when she joined Stagecoach in Lichfield. Panis Angelicus – C. Franck performed by Izzy C (Voice) Izzy Clayton (14), joined LCS in 2019 having moved from Blackburn to Lichfield. Izzy loves music and plays the tenor horn, French horn, piano and thoroughly enjoys singing. She also loves horse riding, swimming and adventuring. Hébé – E. Chausson performed by Georgina G (Voice) Georgina joined LCS in Pre-Reception and quickly developed a keen interest in the musical opportunities offered by the school. She successfully auditioned for a Chorister place and held the position of Head Girl Chorister in her final year. She’s enjoyed the MusicShare opportunities and sang the ‘Walking in the Air’ solo in The Snowman tour in the Cathedral. Georgina is currently preparing for her Grade 7 Flute exam, Grade 6 Singing and Grade 5 Piano. She’s a member of the school Orchestra and is very much enjoying singing in Cantorum and Harmonics groups this year. The Imperial March (Darth Vader’s Theme) – J. Williams performed by Harry A (Trombone) Harry began playing the trombone in Year 4 - he had a blue, plastic trombone as a brass one was too heavy! He achieved Grade 4 this summer and is now working towards Grade 5. But really, playing football is his first love! This series resumed yesterday with wonderful performances from some of our youngest performers in this concert series so far: The Mexican Hat Dance – Traditional Mexican performed by Francesca B (Flute) Francesca (Year 5) has been playing the flute since Year 1 and she has recently passed her ABRSM Grade 4. She is taught outside of school by Mrs Tranchant. Francesca joined the school in September as a Chorister and is enjoying it very much. When the boat comes in – Traditional(Dance ‘ti thy Daddy comes) byKate R (Flute) Katy (Year 5) started playing the flute last June and has just passed her Grade 2 with a distinction. She was also assessed for Grade 2 recorder on the same day and got a merit (Mrs Lewin teaches her recorder). Katy started teaching herself to play the piano during lockdown. The two then performed a lovely duet of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ by Alan Menken to conclude the concert. This was particularly pleasing and impressive as I had only asked them the day before whether they might be able to perform something together to finish the concert. Mention must be made of the wonderful musical nativity performances in their varying guises at Longdon at the end of last term, plus the fantastic Winter Wonderland Concert in the Cathedral, and the School Carol Services. It was such a thrill to have so many groups back and performing together and definitely made a magical end to the term. We were also thrilled that F-ABBA, the new staff group were able to perform for pupils at the Lichfield campus on the last day and that Taking Back Winter – a wonderful student band consisting of Georgina G (keyboards), Harry Walton (guitar), Sophie M (drums and band manager) all from Y11, alongside Josie S (Y12) on vocals and a certain ‘young at heart’ member in the form of Mr Chamberlin (bass) performing for the staff on the last day. I do hope I have not missed anything, as it was such a busy final couple of weeks – but well done and thank you to everybody for all their hard work and brilliance! There is much to look forward to this term so do check out the ‘My School Portal’ calendar and watch this space for further updates on what is to come!
