Over 500 offers for universities at home and abroad

Published by Canford School on Wednesday 6th of July 2022

With all applications to university and higher education now completed, we are delighted for the 156 Canfordians who have in total received over 500 offers this year. 78% of these are to Russell Group/Sunday Times Top 12 institutions in the UK, with five pupils heading to the US.

Ten pupils have received offers to Oxford and Cambridge. Five Canfordians have gained places on highly competitive courses to read Medicine, which it is widely acknowledged to have received a record number of applications this year.

We congratulate all our Canfordians on this wonderful set of offers, and an additional ‘well done’ to those who have successfully applied to institutions involving a more complex and rigorous application and interview process:

Oxford: Jacob (Philosophy and German), Nathaniel (Chemistry), Alice (Classical Archaeology and Ancient History), Emma (History), Milind (Medicine), Jake (Philosophy, Politics and Economics), Harry (Chemistry)

Cambridge: Tommy (Natural Sciences), Lucy (English), Catherine (Modern and Medieval Languages), Agnes (Medicine), Alex (Medicine), Aman (Medicine) and Sana (Medicine).

Canford is an official SAT testing centre for international university admissions. Following this separate detailed entry process, five leavers are heading for US institutions this year, including four with full scholarships and Flora the first Canfordian to join an OC sibling, her brother Robbie, at the same US college, Colgate:

Arian (Columbia, New York – scholarship combined with 2 years at Frances Po, France), Flora (Colgate, New York), Alicia (Bellarmine, Kentucky – scholarship), Charlotte (Pepperdine, California - scholarship), and Rhys (University of Maryland – scholarship).

Once again the range of different courses chosen reflects the vision of the school for exploring opportunities for all and following their own personal career paths, whichever direction they choose. Alongside traditional curriculum subjects are many occupation-related courses including Accountancy, Chemical Engineering, Communications and Media, Contemporary and Popular Music, Criminology, Drama and Film Studies, Environmental Sustainability Science, Equine Business Management, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture, Psychology, Quantity Surveying and Songwriting. Pupils are also heading to Art Foundation courses at Manchester School of Art and Arts University, Bournemouth.

Head of Careers Michael Doherty commented:

"It has been another challenging year for Canfordians applying for higher education. There have been well documented uncertainties in the press over the availability of places following the pandemic which caused many students to defer last year and some universities have also been making decisions unusually late. I am absolutely delighted to see such an excellent number of offers and every applicant should individually feel very proud of what they have achieved after 2 very difficult years. I wish them all every success with their forthcoming external examinations and myself and the Careers team are available both in the coming weeks and on results day to offer any further support and guidance as needed.”
