Singing Up!

Over 70 Gresham's pupils from Years 2 to 6 recently took part in a day of singing workshops led by Michelle Wolfe, a freelance Director of Arts Education and new member of the team of music staff at Gresham's.

The Pre-Prep Choir, which involves every child in Year 2 and 3, rehearsed in their School hall during the morning before the attention switched to the children from Years 4 6, who rehearsed such songs as 'Ain't no mountain high enough' and Katy Perry's 'Firework' in the afternoon session. The two schools then came together for a final rehearsal of a gospel medley and 'Any dream will do' amongst others, before performing their programme in front of a packed audience at the Prep School.

Also performing were the Chamber Choir, who are a choir of nine Year 7 and 8 pupils who specialise in close 3-part harmony. They chose to perform 'Jar of hearts', which they will be performing on a choir tour to Switzerland over the Easter holidays.

All the repertoire for the day was chosen from 'Sing up' the national singing programme that was set up in 2007 which aims to get every school in the country singing. The pieces were designed to help improve singing technique and skills, particularly as many of the participants have individual singing lessons, and the day very definitely succeeded in its aims to promote the enjoyment of singing and inspired the children to pursue singing as an integral part of their musical education at Gresham's.
