St James Takes to the Slopes

On the 10th of December it was finally time for the eagerly awaited Ski Trip which has been in the making since before Covid changed our lives. 50 pupils and 6 staff made the journey to Les Meinures in the French Alps for what was set to be a fantastic week on the slopes.

The first few days saw us experience almost perfect skiing conditions that allowed all the pupils, experts and beginners alike, to enjoy excellent snow and blue skies. The beginners developed at a rapid pace, the intermediates honed their skills and the experts were challenged by the fantastic set of instructors we had.

Towards the end of the week the conditions became more challenging with yet more snow but cloudy, flat light pushed the boys out of their comfort zone and forced them to develop at an even faster pace. All the boys ended each ski session tired but thoroughly happy.

Our time off the slopes was almost as good as on them! The hotel was based right in the middle of town and at the bottom of the slopes, allowing us to access the cafes and shops of the village when we had free time. Experiencing the French ‘café culture’ first hand – the crepes were amazing!

The food was excellent and there was plenty of it, with seconds and even thirds available if we wanted it. The hot meal and hour of downtime at lunch was brilliant and allowed us to relax and refuel before hitting the slopes again in the afternoon.

In the evenings we were kept busy with treasure hunts, quizzes, crepe nights and an evening at the local sports centre. We also had the unique experience of watching the amazing England vs France Quarter Final in France!

We all had an amazing trip. I must say a massive thank you to Mr Atkinson-Young, Mr Byrne, Mr Hitchcock, Mr Johnson, Mr Prendergast and Miss Yadav, and most importantly Mr Wassell who had the mammoth task of organising such a wonderful trip. I am sure everyone has some very good memories of the trip and will never forget them.
