On 29 March, ACS International School Cobham welcomed 250 Surrey schoolchildren to attend SATROFest, a fun-filled event for Year 8 and 9 students which showcased the exciting pathways and career opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).
21 schools from the South East each sent one team of students to the event, which was organised by educational charity Surrey SATRO. On the day, students had the opportunity to meet industry employers, get involved in hands-on activities, attend STEM workshops hosted by industry leaders, and hear from professionals at different stages in their careers. From KPMG to Surrey University Vet School, attending organisations extended across finance, aerospace, satellite technology and eDNA sectors.
Richard Harrold, Education Leader and Head of Data Protection at ACS International Schools, said:
"ACS Cobham is proud to have hosted this year's Satrofest - it is one of the standout events in the Surrey School calendar which aims to open students' eyes to new and interesting careers in science and technology that they may not have considered before"
As part of the event, student teams had to work together to solve a humanitarian engineering problem, whilst finding out how different STEM careers, and their related skills, can support the success or failure of a project. Each team had a 'passport' in which students recorded their attendance and detailed the organisations that they spoke to during the event, encouraging them to engage with as many organisations as possible throughout the day.
Alyssa, Grade 8 Student from ACS Cobham, said:
"I love being part of the Satro event, i came last year in grade 7 and really enjoyed metting all the different employers that were there. The group of tasks are especially fun and it really opens your eyes up tp all the opportunities for in the STEM world."
