Superb Bryanston Success At Salisbury Classical Reading Competition

Published by Bryanston School on Thursday 16th of March 2023

Last week, fourteen Bryanston pupils from D to A3 travelled to Godolphin School to take part in the annual Salisbury Classical Association Reading Competition.

The competition was attended by Sandroyd, Bishop Wordsworth’s, Godolphin, Dauntsey’s and Bryanston. Students were tasked with reading or reciting from memory a range of passages from Classical authors such as Horace, Ovid and Tacitus.

Head of Classics Dr Pullan commented: “The Bryanston team had spent the past month putting hours of practice into their pieces, and their endeavour paid off, as we comprehensively won the senior section, winning every category that we entered, and claimed first and second in any for which we entered two participants.”

Overall, we claimed eleven first prizes (a £20 book token), and four second prizes (a £15 book token). Amongst this comprehensive excellence, particular mentions must go to Ana W (C), who learnt a long passage of Virgil off-by-heart, and Isla D (A3) and Zaynadeen H (B), who claimed first prizes in two separate categories. The latter also accomplished the very rare achievement of attaining full marks for his performance of Odyssey 9 in the Junior Greek section.
