MORE than 200 people attended an open day to celebrate the completion of Taunton School's ambitious £2.3-million expansion project.

The scheme has seen the historic Grange at Kingston St Mary transformed into an International Middle School for up to 60 children, aged from eight to 14.

Guests from across the community attended the sun-drenched open day and were given guided tours of the new facility before enjoying refreshments and entertainment by Taunton School pupils.

Guest of honour was the MP for Taunton, Jeremy Browne, while others present included the chairman of Somerset County Council, Cllr John Edney, and the leader of Taunton Deane Council, Cllr John Williams.

A wide range of organisations from Kingston St Mary itself were also represented including the parish council, primary school and St Mary's church.

Mr Browne said the new International Middle School was a "remarkable achievement."

He added: "I don't think I've ever come across a project which has gone from concept to opening as quickly as this one."

He said Taunton School deserved to be congratulated for being ahead of the game, describing it as "pioneering."

Guests were welcomed by the chair of governors, Jane Barrie, and also heard from the headmaster, Dr John Newton, and Caroline Nixon, principal of Taunton School International.

Only last month, The Grange was visited by the Secretary of State for Education, the Rt Hon Michael Gove, who unveiled a plaque to commemorate its completion.
