Shrub School Wins Platinum Award

Lockers Park is proud to announce that our Shrub School has won the prestigious ‘Green Tree Platinum Award’ from the Woodland Trust.

The Green Tree Schools Award encourages outdoor learning and inspires pupils about trees, woods and wildlife. Schools are rewarded for doing environmental projects such as tree planting, reducing CO2 emissions and visiting woods. Points are collected for each activity completed, progressing through bronze, silver and gold levels up to the prestigious Platinum Award.

More than 14,000 schools have signed up to the Green Tree Schools initiative since 2008. By achieving the Platinum Award, Lockers Park has joined a small group of schools nationally who have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to supporting their local environment.

Shrub School

Shrub School is a dedicated nature and outdoor education programme delivered from Reception to Year 6. It focuses on exploration, understanding of the natural world, and developing a range of bushcraft-style skills.

Lockers Park boys have been involved in a wide array of different projects and challenges to win the Platinum Award from nature trails and scavenger hunts, to den building and outdoor games. Boys have built different outdoor habitats, such as a hedgehog sanctuary, a bug hotel and swift boxes. Lessons focus on a range of bushcraft skills such as fire building, outdoor cooking, knots and lashings, navigation and first aid. The curriculum is delivered in our outdoor classroom, outdoor workshop, and in The Shrubs themselves.

 Mr Taylor, Headmaster of Lockers Park said, “I am extremely proud of all our boys for the part they played in achieving this fantastic award. Shrub School is a natural extension of Lockers Park’s practical, problem-based approach to education. We continue to make significant investment in our outdoor learning provision to allow the boys to make the most of our fantastic 23 acres of grounds.”

The boys have approached all the Shrub School activities enthusiastically and enjoyed learning about the world around them.
