St Helen's School Students Shine in Senior Maths Challenge and Mathematical Olympiad

Published by St Helen's School on Tuesday 4th of February 2025

This year has seen another exceptional performance from our students at St Helen's School. Under the expert guidance of Dr Dolby, Head of the Centre for Advanced Mathematics (CAM), they have excelled in both the Senior Maths Challenge (SMC) and the Mathematical Olympiad for Girls (MOG). Their remarkable results highlight a deep commitment to advancing their knowledge and understanding of mathematics.

Record-Breaking Senior Maths Challenge (SMC) ResultsIn the 2024 SMC, our students surpassed previous achievements, securing a total of 13 Golds, the highest number in the school's history. Impressively, all students who achieved Gold will progress to the highly competitive Kangaroo round, with Amy, Rena, Rhea, Akshi, and Katie being entered into the British Mathematical Olympiad (BMO).

In addition to the Gold awards, our students earned:

       -  25 Silver awards, demonstrating a strong intermediate-level performance,

         -  32 Bronze awards, highlighting the depth of mathematical talent across the school.

The SMC results represent the combined efforts of students across Years 11, 12, and 13, with each group contributing to a year of record-breaking achievements. These accomplishments stand as a testament to the work being done by our Centre for Advanced Mathematics and the rigorous training and supportive environment it encourages amongst our students.

Excellence in the Mathematical Olympiad for Girls (MOG)

Our students also excelled in the Mathematical Olympiad for Girls, a prestigious competition designed to inspire and celebrate young female mathematicians.

Our student achieved:    8 Distinctions and 22 Merits awarded to students across Years 11, 12, and 13.

These achievements in both the SMC and MOG reflect the incredible hard work, passion, and perseverance of our students.

We are committed to fostering an environment where girls are empowered to explore their individual talents. Opportunities like these allow those with a passion for mathematics to fully realise their potential. Through initiatives such as The Centre for Advanced Mathematics, we will continue to nurture our students’ mathematical talents, providing tailored guidance and enriching experiences to support the next generation of female mathematicians.

Congratulations to all our award recipients for their dedication and success.
