University of Surrey Law School visit

A group of Year 12 students visited the mock courtroom at the University of Surrey Law School to take part in ‘Street Law’ sessions run by the university’s third year law students.
We participated in an interesting debate on the use of AI to deliver justice and the importance of fact checking sources. We saw examples of how the human skill of understanding nuances and considering a defendant’s personal situation when sentencing is something that AI cannot (yet!) replicate.
Following the debate, we donned wigs and gowns to take part in a mock trial considering the case of two youths charged with recklessness. We learnt under what circumstances an act is classed as recklessness in a court of law and how this can be subsequently punished.
