Year of Faith at St Benedict's School

Published on isbi School News dated Tuesday 18th of September 2012

One thousand three hundred pupils and staff from St Benedict's Junior and Senior Schools marked the start of the Year of Faith and a new school year on the first day of Michaelmas term with a special Mass in the Abbey, concelebrated by Abbot Martin Shipperlee and other members of the Monastic Community working in the School. The Year of Faith is being celebrated by the whole Catholic Church and formally begins on Thursday, 11th October and concludes on the Solemnity of Christ the King in 2013. This special year has been called by Pope Benedict XVI to renew all Christians in their life of faith. 'The 'door of faith' is always open for us, ushering us into the life of communion with God and offering entry into his Church'.

During the joint School Mass the Headmasters, Chris Cleugh and Rob Simmons, the deputy Headmasters and Headmistresses and the Heads of RE in the Junior School and Senior School renewed their baptismal promises and led the whole School in the Profession of Faith. Afterwards, boys and girls who had recently celebrated the Sacraments of First Holy Communion and Confirmation joined in the Offertory Procession. They presented an Icon called 'Christ is our Reconciliation', which will be displayed in the Junior School and Senior School during the Year of Faith.

Headmaster Chris Cleugh commented, 'The Profession of Faith was a deeply spiritual experience. It was wonderful to have the whole School coming together in the Abbey to begin the new school year and the Year of Faith together.'

The School's celebration of the Year of Faith will culminate next year with a Pilgrimage to the Holy Land.
