VICTORY IN EUROPE DAY 80TH CEREMONY
On Thursday morning we held VE 80 ceremony at the school flagpole which was attended by staff and tutor representatives from each year. A moment of reflection took place and Mr Lerego read a portion of Churchill’s VE Day speech. The last post was played by Jack B and the choir sang a medley of wartime songs.
VE THEMED LUNCH
Events were televised at different points throughout the day and our catering team produced a wonderful celebratory menu with imaginative names such as Spitfire Corned Beef Hash and Vera Lynn Fruit Flan!
VE PROJECTS
VE Day 80 has been commemorated in a variety of ways this year. Some members of the Year 8 History project group: Wickham L, Jonathan M, Ava D, Charlie I and Harriet F helped with attaching all of the red, white and blue tissue paper flowers made by all our tutor groups, to our VE 80 bases provided by Mr Bartlett in DT. This display was presented in the ceremony held at the flagpole on VE Day itself.
Our Library supported the occasion with a range of war time books for students to read. The tutor groups also took part in a ‘decorate your bunting’ competition. There were some great creations and the winners were Mrs Carrier’s tutor group. In all Key Stage 3 lessons students have been learning about the war and watched a recording of a live production by Theatre Online about one family’s experience during World War II. This was followed with a choice of homework activities such as newspaper front cover writing of VE day to 1945 menus to celebrate the day, collages and poems. These are on display in school. Well done to everyone’s efforts. Thank you to the whole school community for getting involved in this very special commemoration.
