Published by St Helen's School on Friday 16th of May 2025

We are delighted to celebrate the success of Piya, a talented Year 8 student at St Helen’s, who has been invited to an awards ceremony at the University of Southampton to collect her Merit award in this year’s STAG Maths Challenge.

This is a tremendous achievement for Piya, and for St Helen’s, as this marks the first year our students have entered the challenge, which is run by the STAG Research Centre at Southampton. The challenge is known for its innovative approach to mathematical problem-solving, asking students to tackle a series of complex and creative questions based on the signs of the zodiac. The competition encourages lateral thinking, resilience, and logical reasoning, and we are incredibly proud that Piya’s work stood out on a national platform.

Piya demonstrated exceptional perseverance and intellectual curiosity throughout the competition, qualities we actively nurture within our school community. Her success showcases the value of giving students the freedom to explore challenging material beyond the classroom and reflects our broader commitment to empowering every girl to find her voice, pursue her passions, and strive for excellence.

At St Helen’s, we believe mathematics is not just a subject, it’s a powerful tool for creativity, critical thinking, and discovery. Opportunities like the STAG Challenge are part of our wider mission to provide girls with the confidence and encouragement to take on bold academic challenges.

We are incredibly proud of Piya’s accomplishment and know this is just the beginning of her mathematical journey. Whether inside or outside the classroom, our students are proving every day that with the right support and inspiration, there are no limits to what they can achieve.
