LIV's Big Adventure in Bude

Published by St Mary's Calne on Monday 30th of June 2025

The Bude residential trip was an unforgettable adventure filled with challenges, camaraderie, and new experiences. Each morning began with a burst of energy, either through a refreshing swim in the sea pool or a bracing run before breakfast. Throughout the week, the LIV engaged in a range of outdoor activities that pushed them out of their comfort zones, helped them build resilience, and encouraged them to support one another. Every pupil overcame at least one personal challenge every day, and everyone returned to school with a deep sense of achievement.

The week started with the 'Team Trail' in warm sunshine, an activity that tested teamwork and determination. The LIV worked together to overcome a series of physical challenges: carrying water-filled buckets over walls, navigating obstacle courses while blindfolded, and sliding headfirst into a pool of murky water, all while being drenched in the process. Despite the mess and chaos, spirits remained high and laughter echoed across the trail.

Another memorable activity was surfing. Although most of the pupils had little prior experience, our supportive instructors helped everyone make the most of it. On a rainy day under dark, brooding skies, the choppy waves added excitement to the experience, making it all the more exhilarating. Several of LIV managed to stand on their boards and ride some impressive waves.

Pupils also explored the local landscape during the Bude Fact Hunt and Walk. Guided along fields and cliffside paths, they learned about the area’s history while piecing together clues. The panoramic view of the sea, glimpses of Lundy Island on the horizon, and the story of the ever-moving compass due to coastal erosion added depth to the walk, leaving a lasting impression on everyone.

On the canal, kayaking proved to be a firm favourite. Despite the rain, LIV found the experience productive and full of fun as they played games and improved their skills. Similarly, canoeing provided an opportunity to build perseverance and teamwork. The physical effort of paddling together and playing games, such as swapping canoes, strengthened bonds, and the group emerged from the experience proud and united.

The 'High Ropes' course offered thrills and personal triumphs. From climbing towering structures to attempting to catch the trapeze mid-air, the IV challenged their fears with courage. The sense of accomplishment was especially strong after completing the 14-metre course; this was perfect preparation for an afternoon of climbing and abseiling, where pupils scaled an 18-metre wall before making a daring descent.

A final exciting experience was mountain boarding, an activity that combines elements of snowboarding and skateboarding. Pupils eagerly took to the boards, navigating downhill terrain with exhilaration and developing new balance and control skills.

By the end of the week, pupils returned to school not only with memories of laughter and adventure but also with a stronger sense of self and a greater appreciation for each other. As always, the Bude trip was far more than just a series of land and water-based activities - it was a journey of growth, resilience, and unforgettable moments - and we all ticked off another item on our the St Mary’s ‘150 Bucket List’ of challenging and enjoyable tasks to complete during each student’s time at St Mary’s Calne: by ‘enjoying an ice-cream in Bude’!

Throughout the week, the instructors could not have been more complimentary of the girls’ behaviour and attitude. They remarked that they always look forward to visits from St Mary’s Calne, praising the group’s enthusiasm and teamwork.
