An Atlantic Triumph

On Monday 9 June, the School community had the unique opportunity to welcome back a true inspiration, Old Stoic, Captain Imy O'Brien (Nugent '13). Fresh from a record-breaking feat of endurance and teamwork, she shared her incredible story in what was a powerful and motivating talk for all.

Captain O'Brien recently etched her name in the history books as part of Force Atlantic, the British Army's first all-female team to row unsupported across the Atlantic Ocean. The team of four undertook the formidable Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, a gruelling 3,000-mile journey from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua.

For 46 days, 1 hour, and 55 minutes, Capt. O'Brien and her crew battled towering waves, relentless storms, sleep deprivation, and the immense physical and mental challenges of the 'world's toughest row'. Their journey was a testament to the power of resilience, collaboration, and unwavering determination in the face of adversity.

Force Atlantic's mission extended beyond the immense physical challenge. Their endeavour was built on three core pillars: to PROMOTE the strength and capabilities of women, to INSPIRE others to overcome their own challenges, and to foster a sense of BELONGING and teamwork. In line with these aims, the team also raised a significant amount of money for 'The Girls' Network', a charity dedicated to empowering young women from disadvantaged backgrounds.

It was a remarkable opportunity for our pupils, particularly the Combined Cadet Force (CCF), to hear firsthand from someone who embodies the very qualities of leadership, perseverance, and service that we strive to instil. Captain O'Brien's story of leading her team across a vast ocean was a powerful illustration of what can be achieved when individuals work together to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

We are incredibly proud to call Captain Imy O'Brien one of our own, and are thrilled that she chose to return to Stowe to share her experiences.
