Y7 & 8 Residential Trip to Bude

Published by Dean Close School (St Johns) on Friday 27th of June 2025

On Sunday 22nd June, Year 7 and 8 students arrived for their three-night residential at OA Surf Club in Bude. On the first day, they walked along the scenic coastal path to Widemouth Bay for their first surf lesson. There, they learned how to catch waves and how to stand up on their boards in stages. Everyone had a great time, and some even managed to stand up on their first attempt! That evening, the group enjoyed a barbecue and played games such as Water Categories and Empire, creating a fun and lively atmosphere.

The following day, the group split into two. One half went canoeing along the Bude Canal, completing fun challenges and races during the three-mile paddle. The other half went coasteering at Bossiney Cove, where students jumped off cliffs, supported and encouraged one another, and even swam in a stunning sea cave. Later that day, everyone reunited at the beach for their second surf lesson. With growing confidence, almost all students managed to stand up and ride the waves. They also learned new skills, including how to change direction on their boards. The day ended with more activities and a relaxed movie night at the bunkhouse.

On the third day, the groups swapped over, giving everyone the opportunity to experience both canoeing and coasteering. In the afternoon, they visited Bude town to browse the shops and pick up some souvenirs and treats. Before heading back to the beach for their final surf session, tweaking their skills and enjoying the calmer waters.

On the final morning, the students packed up and returned to the beach for a bodyboarding session. They caught some impressive waves and enjoyed playing in the sea one last time. Overall, the residential was a fantastic experience filled with delicious meals, fun games, and the chance to learn exciting new skills. The students returned home with great memories and a real sense of achievement.
