A Warm Welcome to Clare Ives

During its 150th year, The Leys is pleased to welcome Clare Ives as its new Head, succeeding Martin Priestley following his twelve years of outstanding leadership.


Dr Ives joins The Leys from Sevenoaks School, where she served as Senior Deputy Head. Her career in education has been shaped by a deep commitment to academic excellence, pastoral care, and inclusive leadership. Prior to Sevenoaks, she held a variety of roles at Canford School, including Boarding Housemistress, Head of History, and Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Lead.


Educated at the University of St Andrews, she earned a first-class degree in Modern History and completed a PhD on Robert Kennedy’s Civil Rights Record. Her professional journey also includes eight years as a civil servant, a testament to her dedication to public service.


A passionate musician and sportswoman, Dr Ives brings a rich and varied perspective to school life. She is joined in Cambridge by her partner Emma. She has two children, Adam and Ellie who are at University.


Dr Ives shared her thoughts as she begins her new role: “It is a tremendous honour to join The Leys at such a significant moment in its history. From my first visit, I was struck by the warmth of the community and the School’s unwavering commitment to nurturing the whole person. I look forward to working with pupils, staff, parents, and alumni to ensure that The Leys continues to thrive as a place of opportunity, belonging, and ambition.”
