Millfield student Oliver Austin has topped off an exceptional period of clay pigeon shooting success with a bronze medal finish at the World Championships this summer.

The 2025 World FITASC Fosse Universelle-UT Championships took place in Rome, Italy, with Oliver winning team bronze for Great Britain and finishing sixth individually after a nail-biting finish. The competition showcased the world’s best young clay shooting talent, with over 300 competitors from 17 different countries taking part.

17-year-old Oliver has collected an extensive list of achievements in shooting this year, including becoming the Universal Trap British Junior U21 Champion, winning junior gold at the Olympic Trap British Grand Prix, claiming the High Gun and Team Gold in the British Schools Championship against 35 teams and 140 competitors and qualifying for the GB team for the European Universal Trench Trap Championships. Oliver is the school shooting captain, and also represents the Millfield Cadets, claiming the high gun at the CCF National Championship this year.

The Upper Sixth student joined Millfield Prep in Year 5 for its combination of academic and sport opportunities. Joining originally as a swimmer, the opportunity to try out new sports saw Oliver identify a new passion. Oliver said, “I joined Millfield because I liked how you can focus on sports alongside your academics. I was first introduced to clay shooting in Year 7 as one of the teachers ran a shooting club. I immediately loved the sport, and that passion has carried on throughout senior school. I’ve still been able to keep up my swimming, but now it’s more of a hobby for me as I prioritise competing in clay shooting.”

Oliver is currently taking his A levels and is still able to keep up with his academics whilst training and competing away from school. He said, “I go away a lot for competitions. Millfield offer twice a week shooting which is great, so I still get training in during the school week. The school are really flexible around our timetables; when I need to take time out for competitions, they support me to stay on track with my academic work.”

In the future, Oliver hopes to continue with his clay shooting and compete in the Olympic Trap disciplines at the Olympic Games.

Oliver will be following in the footsteps of OM Peter Wilson who won a gold medal in the double trap at the London 2012 Olympic Games. The clay shooting programme at Millfield welcomes all students regardless of age or ability and provides a supportive environment to enhance their shooting skills under the guidance of six experienced coaches, with opportunities to compete nationally.
