From Hallfield to Cambridge – Old Hallfieldian shares her journey!

Anusha Salhan’s secrets to success – work hard, make the most of opportunities inside and outside of the classroom and pursue interests!
On Tuesday 13th January, former pupil Anusha Salhan (OH 2009–2018) returned to school to deliver two inspiring talks to our Year 6 pupils and Hallfield Seniors.
Anusha spoke candidly about her own journey from Hallfield to the University of Cambridge, where she is now a first-year undergraduate studying History. She shared reflections on the importance of working hard, making the most of opportunities both inside and outside the classroom, and pursuing interests through clubs, debating, and extra-curricular activities.
For our Hallfield Seniors, Anusha offered particularly timely advice as students begin to think ahead to GCSE choices, emphasising the value of curiosity, resilience, and gaining experience beyond academics. With Year 6 pupils preparing to take their next educational steps, her message focused on embracing change with confidence and excitement. If you don’t give things a chance, how will you ever know if you like them or not!
During her visit, Anusha also enjoyed a tour of the school and was particularly delighted to discover that artwork she helped create as a pupil is still proudly on display. The sun bear statue, which formed part of Birmingham’s ‘Big Sleuth’ sculpture trail, has since been returned to school and now stands guard outside the Prep Library — a reminder of the lasting connection between past and present Hallfield pupils.
Anusha’s impressive background — including top academic achievements, leadership roles in youth politics, and founding Per Capita Media at Cambridge — provided a powerful example of how passion, commitment, and initiative can open doors. Her continued work in debating, mentoring, and public engagement, including appearances on the BBC and LBC, further inspired students to find their voice and get involved.
We are extremely grateful to Anusha for returning to Hallfield and for delivering such thoughtful, motivating talks. It was a pleasure to welcome her back and to see our pupils so engaged and inspired by her story.
