Millfield Student Crowned U17 US Squash National Champion

Millfield student Tamir Wiegenfeld has been crowned the U17 champion at the US Squash Nationals, defeating the top players in his age group from across the United States.
Remarkably, this was only Tamir’s third tournament in the US. Throughout the competition, he demonstrated exceptional skill, composure, and determination to secure the national title.
Since joining Millfield for Upper Sixth in September, Tamir has shown outstanding commitment to his development, with his recent success reflecting the dedication he brings to his training.
Speaking about the programme, Tamir said: “My favourite thing about the squash programme at Millfield is the routine and structure. Every week the sessions are already planned, making it much easier to focus on specific things to improve.”
Tamir began playing squash at the age of 12 in Herzliya, Israel, alongside his brother and sister. Now in Upper Sixth, he balances an intensive training schedule, training five days a week alongside strength and conditioning sessions, with his academic studies.
Reflecting on his success, Tamir said: “It was pretty amazing to win US Nationals because it was only my third US tournament ever.” He added: “The most important thing in balancing squash and academics is making sure those little breaks in your day don’t go to waste.”
Ian Thomas, Director of Squash at Millfield, said: “Tamir has worked on all facets of his game in an organised and methodical manner, and the growth he has shown both technically and in his mindset has provided him with an excellent foundation to compete at the highest level within his age group. It is pleasing to see him maximise his time at Millfield.”
Looking ahead, Tamir aims to help the Israel national junior team reach the semi-finals at the European Championships and hopes to secure a team medal.
He will depart Millfield at the end of this academic year to attend Cornell University, where he will compete at the NCAA Division I level as a member of the Ivy League. Mark Andrew Burke, Associate Head Coach at Cornell University, is looking forward to welcoming Tamir later this year: “At Cornell we are ecstatic at the recruitment of the young player, Tamir Weigenfeld, from Millfield School. In particular, we are excited that, in the last year, he has improved and matured so dramatically. He will be a very important member of our squash program, come August, this year and we can’t wait to welcome him to Cornell Squash and Cornell University. Besides being a high-level squash player, Tamir is a brilliant and smart young man, and Ian Thomas, the coach at Millfield, has done a fine job mentoring him the last year. I’d also like to congratulate his parents, who must be very proud with his recent success at the US Junior National title.”
