University of Surrey Music Careers

On Monday 29th June, we visited the University of Surrey Music Department for an afternoon of insight into the music industry. Arranged by Surrey Arts, a Council run initiative, we attended five workshops run by experts in their field. We learnt about how different microphones work, even touching upon A level Physics, and which ones to use in different situations. We became music producers and layered digital instruments on Ableton Move devices. In the Film & TV session we witnessed how music and sound can change the message a scene conveys without having to reshoot footage. We became familiar with synthesizers and discovered how well-known music was created. It was fascinating hearing from a professional guitarist in musical theatre how intensive some shows are to play in, and an army flautist who described playing whilst on horseback.
