A Unique and Iconic School In 1801, His Royal Highness Frederick Duke of York laid the foundation stone in Chelsea of what was to become The Duke of York's Royal Military School, a school for the children of military personnel which opened in 1803. Then in 1909, the school relocated to its present site in Dover, Kent and in 2010, we became the first full state boarding academy, opening our doors to any family wishing to choose this unique and iconic school for their child’s secondary...

Word From The Head

From Alex Foreman, Principal

I should like to wish you a very warm welcome to The Duke of York’s Royal Military School.

We have a rich military heritage that provides the backbone of the Academy; it is a huge benefit to the ethos, values, and learning culture of the School. However, the best advert for our School is our students who come from a wide range of backgrounds and are known as Dukies once they start here.

Being a Dukie is so much more than being a student; there is a sense of belonging and community in a ‘home from home’. We are proud to provide a stable, caring, and understanding environment for the children of members of the Armed Forces, but also children from all backgrounds. We are here for the Armed Forces, but we are also here for families who have absolutely nothing to do with the military at all, but buy into our ethos, values, and want what this magnificent School has to offer.

Our philosophy is to develop each and every child, offering them life skills and leadership opportunities through an ‘all-round education with an academic focus’. Our aim is simple; nurturing accomplishment through hard work, discipline, and evolving individual talents. Our unique Academy provides a wide range of co-curricular opportunities that allows our students to develop skills and experiences they would not normally be exposed to. My very simple message for all our Dukies and our staff is to make the most of this incredible School.

If you are considering the next stage of education for your child, I hope you will choose The Duke of York’s Royal Military School for our very special ingredients. Our students are the best thing about our School; I would be delighted if you were able to visit us, meet our inspirational young people and see for yourself what's on offer here. Becoming a Dukie is to become part of a very special and unique family that lasts a lifetime.
