Helping The Environment With A Beach Clean

Published by Kingswood Senior School on Tuesday 23rd of November 2021

On Sunday, 19 students and three members of staff made the most of the superb autumn weather to take part in a beach clean on Newton beach, Porthcawl.

After a quick pit stop on the way there we were greeted on arrival by Freddie in Year 9 who had beaten us to the beach and already done a super job in filling a bin liner. Armed with litter pickers and bin liners of our own the Kingwood team set about picking rubbish and debris from the sea defences, dunes and tidelines.

Key finds amongst the multitudes of discarded cans, bottles, lolly sticks and fishing wire included a fridge door and three sadly deceased dogfish. After collecting eight bin liners worth of plastic and rubbish the team enjoyed some well-earned lunch before taking part in a high class game of rounders and even higher class game of beach football.

Mr Musgrove, our Physics teacher and the leader in our Sustainability Committee said of the event, “To see the passion and engagement from our pupils in this beach clean was wonderful. Kingswood is a school with a huge focus on sustainability and we encourage pupils to consider their own consumption and waste. We have been doing this activity for many years and often find others doing the same thing. It is reassuring to see that we are not alone in our efforts to try to tackle the problem we face today. By hopefully changing our mind-set and behaviours it will lead to an improvement in the world we will leave behind.”

A huge thank you to all who took part.
