Fourteen girls from Bancroft’s Prep took part in the Southern semi-final of the English Chess Federation's National Schools Girls' Championships (U11) on Sunday 9 October. Accompanied by Mr Layburn and team manager Mrs Life, they travelled to St Catherine’s School in Guildford where 45 teams from 20 schools competed in an intense day of chess. Schools represented included Highgate, City Juniors, North London Collegiate and Woodford Green Prep.Very well done to the Prep’s A team of Zoe (Betas), Olivia (P1) and Aashritha (P2) who came a fantastic first, and now will represent Bancroft’s in the National Finals. All fourteen girls loved the experience of playing tournament chess and it was a day full of smiles as well as medals and trophies
Chess is an extremely popular co-curricular activity at the Prep School, with three visiting chess coaches and around a hundred Prep children all getting expert coaching before school, at lunchtime and after school.
"It was a really fun day, we’ve learned so much and Zoe, Aashritha and I can’t wait to go to the National finals next year."
