Dauntsey’s Pupils Embark On DW Training

Published by Dauntsey's on Tuesday 17th of January 2023

The countdown is now on for the 2023 Devizes to Westminster race.  A dedicated group of 14 Sixth Form pupils from Dauntsey’s have been selected to enter this year’s Junior Race on behalf of the school and have now embarked on an intensive training programme leading up to the race over the Easter weekend.

The teams will be training three afternoons per week on the Kennet and Avon Canal, as well as entering a series of warm-up races before the final race over Easter weekend.

Sam Moore, Head of Adventure Education says,

“Whilst the race, often referred to as ‘The Canoeist’s Everest’, is a test of strength, determination and skill, it also teaches participants to show resilience in the face of adversity, to recognise and control risks, to learn from all experiences, to look out for others and the importance of being organised.  It is not an experience to enter into lightly, but the rewards are well worth it.”

The Devizes to Westminster Race has been held annually since 1948 and is one of the longest canoe races in the world.  It covers 125 miles and requires the kayaks to be carried around 76 locks. Dauntsey's has been entering teams into the DW since 1967 and more than 400 pupils and staff have completed the course.
