Celebrating World Book Day

Published by Edgbaston High School for Girls on Monday 6th of March 2023

The whole school has enjoyed celebrating World Book Day this week. In Prep and Westbourne on Thursday, girls from Nursery to Year 6, and the members of staff, came dressed as a wide variety of different book characters. There was much discussion throughout the day about books, inspired by the many costumes.

In assembly, Prep girls were encouraged to remember how lucky we are to have so many books at home and in school to choose from, when some children may not have access to any books at all.

‘Personal choice’ was the theme we chose for the day and the children were introduced to the 5 ‘w’s.  We all know the importance of why we read and the children were asked to consider the other choices they have: where to read, what to read, when to read and who to read with. They have been encouraged to design a book token for the national competition illustrating some of the choices they make.

In Westbourne, we welcomed parents of Kindergarten girls to join us for some book-related activities.  They really enjoyed taking part and reading to the children and we were delighted to have them in school.

We want every day to be a book day but without the dressing up!
