Mary Wakefield Westmorland Festival

The Mary Wakefield Westmorland Festival, running from Saturday, 11 March 2023, to Saturday, 18 March 2023 is a week-long Festival of adjudicated instrumental and vocal classes held in Kendal, Cumbria. The Festival dates from 1885, and many of our beautiful trophies date from its earliest days.

Windermere School has had the most phenomenal run this year, winning a total of 14 categories won, thanks to the hard work and dedication of the students and our Head of Music, Mrs McCallum. Emily B and Tania P have also been selected for the prestigious Jim Noble Award, which carries a £1,000 prize.

Good luck to the students chosen to participate in the Showcase Concert on Friday evening, at 7pm at Kendal Town Hall.
The Sybil Cropper Cup for the Vocal Solo for Years 5 and 6 was won by Indie B, who sang “Orange and yellow and brown” by Lin Marsh, always a popular composer for younger singers.
Young composer Georgiana B won the Composers Class, Years 10 and 11, winning a Festival Certificate.
The Bellingham Cup for Year 13 and under Instrumental Ensemble was won by the Windermere School Ensemble playing Danserye by Susato arranged by Hare.
The Windermere School Trio played the Allegro from a Trio Sonata by Telemann to win the Centenary Cup in the class for the Instrumental Trio, Year 13 and under.
The Instrumental Duet Year 13 and under was won by Karen S and Feline H, playing Rondino by Rameau. They won the Mrs A H Willink Trophy.
Daisy T and Jake L-S played the Duet from Lakme by Delibes to win the Alfred Willink Cup for the Instrumental Duet Year 9 and under.The Instrumental Duet Year 13 and under was won by Karen S and Feline H, playing Rondino by Rameau. They won the Mrs A H Willink Trophy.
Daisy T and Jake L-S played the Duet from Lakme by Delibes to win the Alfred Willink Cup for the Instrumental Duet Year 9 and under.
Kelvin C and Daniel L played the Rondo from Sonata for Piano Duet Op 6 by Beethoven to win the Cup of Perfection in the class for Piano Duet for Four Hands, Year 13 and under.
The Mary Gass Rose Bowl for the Piano Solo Class Year 13 and under was won by Tania P with a movement from Sonatine by Ravel.
The Strings Solo class for Year 11 and under was won by Karen L, who played the Gigue from a Bach Partita. Her trophy is the Mabel H Pierce Cup.
Daisy T played Bee Line by Graham Lyons to win the Woodwind Solo, Year 9 and under, winning the Festival Committee Cup.
The Lady Fletcher Cup for Classical Guitar Year 9 and under was won by Moses H, who played a Gavotte by J S Bach, arranged by Richard Wright.
Sophie B played Lagrima by Tarrega to win the Ethel Margaret McLeod Cup in the Classical Guitar class for Years 10-13.
Emily B played “The Dowie Dens of Yarrow” by Savourna Stevenson to win the Bective Cup for the Strings Solo class for Yr 9 and under.
