Alfie Watts
Race Across The World Winner

Alfie Watts, BBC's Race Across The World Season 4 winner, visited St Chris this week to share his remarkable journey and expertise with our Senior School and Sixth Form students. In two engaging talks, Alfie captivated audiences with stories of resilience, adventure, and personal growth while offering invaluable advice for students considering taking a gap year.

The Power of Friendship and Mental Health Awareness

Alfie began his Morning Talk to the Senior School by highlighting the vital role that his friendship with teammate and best friend Owen played in his success during Race Across the World. Drawing on his experiences, he reflected on how trust, teamwork, and companionship were the cornerstones of his achievement. He also spoke openly about his mental health struggles and how travel and connection with others have shaped his recovery and growth.

As a travel content creator navigating the often challenging world of social media, Alfie shared insights into balancing passion with purpose. He encouraged students to embrace challenges, take risks, and use their own unique stories to inspire and connect with others.

Why Travel?  Discovering the World and Yourself

During his talk with the Sixth Form, Alfie explored the deeper reasons for traveling, especially during a gap year. He explained how travel provides opportunities to take risks, forge meaningful connections, experience incredible cultures, and uncover one’s true passions. “Traveling isn’t just about seeing the world,” Alfie said, “it’s about discovering who you are and the role you want to play in the world.”

Alfie’s Gap Year Tips and Recommendations

For students considering a gap year, Alfie offered detailed advice on destinations, travel tips, and how to make the most of their experience:

Top Gap Year Destinations:

South East Asia: Perfect for first-time travellers due to its affordability and welcoming atmosphere. While flights may be expensive, the cost of living is low, and you’ll meet plenty of like-minded adventurers. Challenges include a poor train network and occasional language barriers.

The Americas: Central and South America offer breathtaking landscapes, fewer crowds, and incredible hiking opportunities. Slightly more expensive but ideal for those seeking a less-touristed experience.

Europe: Interrailing across Europe is fantastic for those anxious about venturing too far from home. Though pricier and populated more by holidaymakers than long-term travellers, it’s a safe and culturally rich option.

Travel Tips, Tricks, and Hacks:

Travel safer: Ensure you have travel insurance, avoid ice in drinks outside Europe, and keep an eye on food hygiene standards. Be cautious while socialising and avoid hitchhiking alone.

Travel lighter: Pack less—your back will thank you! Take advantage of laundrettes and focus on essentials.

Travel smarter: Use tools like Skyscanner for affordable flights, sign up for reward points, and always carry some USD for emergencies. Embrace eSIM technology for staying connected on the go.

Travel cheaper: Buses and trains often beat flights in price and carbon footprint. Support local businesses for meals and accommodation to stretch your budget and give back to the community.

Travel better: Be mindful of your privilege as a traveller. Volunteer, tip generously, and foster connections with locals to leave a positive impact.

Earning While Travelling

Alfie encouraged students to think creatively about funding their travels. Opportunities include

Becoming an independent travel agent.

Joining a work exchange program like Workaway.

Using social media platforms to document and share their experiences

A Final Thought

Alfie’s inspiring visit left students (and staff!) buzzing with excitement and fresh ideas about the possibilities that travel can offer. His candid reflections on mental health, travel, and the power of community resonated deeply with both students and staff. Whether trekking through South America’s stunning landscapes or navigating the bustling cities of Europe, Alfie’s tips and advice ensure that students are well-equipped to embark on their own adventures.

Thank you, Alfie, for sharing your journey and inspiring the next generation of global explorers!
