Hospitality CEO Robert B. Cook brings three decades of global expertise to Scotland's premier boys' school
Merchiston Castle School is delighted to announce the appointment of Robert B. Cook as the new Chairman of the Board of Governors, effective from the end of the Summer term. The appointment follows a formal interview process and comes as the school continues to strengthen its leadership.
Proven Leadership Experience
Robert brings over 30 years of distinguished leadership in the UK's leisure and hospitality sector, having served as CEO of renowned brands including Hotel du Vin & Malmaison, De Vere Hotels, and Virgin Active UK. Originally from Aberdeen, he holds an honorary doctorate from Robert Gordon University in recognition of his significant contribution to the hotel industry.
Currently, Robert owns and operates The Cookie Jar, a luxury boutique hotel in Alnwick, Northumberland, while maintaining advisory and board positions with Dobbies Garden Centres, Terra Firma Capital Partners, Welcome Hotels in Germany, and growth hospitality platform Imbiba.
Continuing Merchiston's Strategic Vision
The appointment comes at a pivotal time for Merchiston, as the school welcomes new Head Huw Jones in August 2025 and continues to adapt to the evolving educational landscape. Robert’s extensive experience in navigating complex business environments and driving organisational excellence aligns perfectly with the school's ambitious plans for the future.
"It is an absolute privilege to support an institution with such a proud heritage and ambitious future," said Robert. "I've built my career by recognising talent and nurturing excellence, and I see those same qualities in abundance throughout Merchiston. This role is about ensuring we continue to successfully navigate the external headwinds the independent school sector has faced in recent years and evolve to meet the demands of tomorrow."
A Decade of Achievement
Robert succeeds Gareth Baird, who has served as Chairman since 2014 and will complete his 11-year tenure on 28th June. Under Gareth’s leadership, Merchiston has achieved significant milestones including the comprehensive refurbishment of boarding houses, the successful launch of The Forest Nursery and Junior School, and the recent introduction of competitive day fees.
"As a parent and a new governor to the Board, Robert has quickly demonstrated his passion for the school, as well as strong business acumen to drive Merchiston forward in this new chapter," said outgoing Chairman Gareth Baird. "As a Merchistonian myself, I am extremely proud of the work we have achieved over the past decade. Merchiston is an outstanding school and I'm delighted to hand over the reins to Robert as we also welcome our new Head, Huw Jones in August."
New Vice Chair and Governors Strengthen Leadership Team
Alongside Robert’s appointment, the school is pleased to announce that Ian McCarlie has been elected Vice Chair of the Board of Governors. A respected commercial lawyer operating in the energy sector, Ian has served as a valued Board member since 2022 and was instrumental in commissioning a recent governance review.
The Board has been further strengthened with the appointment of five new governors bringing diverse expertise:
- Jay Crawford – entrepreneur developing sustainable rural businesses across Ayrshire
- Kelly Foley – brokering international re/insurance solutions background
- Andrew Marshall – the impactful leader behind Scotland's award-winning Carlowrie Group
- Caroline McLaren – experienced HR professional
- John McKean – contributing legal, commercial and marketing background
These new governors have already demonstrated their commitment by actively supporting both the new Head's appointment and the development of Merchiston's innovative fee structure.
