Our First Word Millionaire

Published by Davenies on Thursday 18th of September 2025

We are extremely proud to announce our first word millionaire of this academic year. Jake, Year 6, has managed to read over a million words since July when the Accelerated Reader words banks were reset for this year. Well done Jake!

At Davenies we use Accelerated Reader from Year 3 to Year 8 to help us monitor student reading. It also provides a valuable tool to motivate our boys to read, by keeping a running total of words read throughout the year.

Prizes and stars are awarded for reaching targets and certificates and badges are handed out by the Headmaster, Mr Thomas, in Assembly for every million words read. Most importantly, this supports Davenies boys to form a healthy reading habit and to develop a love of reading for pleasure, which is our ultimate goal.

The library is open every morning before lessons and every lunchtime, for boys to choose their next book, which is in addition to a lesson in the library every week. Our librarian, Mrs Prentice, replenished our titles over the summer and the library has been buzzing with 585 books issued already since the start of term. Keep it up boys!
