Following on from their exams, Year 7 took part in a First Aid training course, an important skill to have covered. The programme was comprised of hands-on experiences exploring a series of emergency First Aid scenarios, and how best to approach them.

This included some well-known staples to interact with such as the recovery position, and the ‘D.R.A.B.C.’ (Danger, Response, Airway, Breathing, and Circulation) primary survey to assess a casualty’s condition.

The year group also learnt CPR, the use of a defibrillator (this was the favourite hands-on activity), how to treat someone who is choking (the Heimlich manoeuvre), and the correct application of bandages. The course trainers and the accompanying slide shows proved eye-opening and visceral for some, yet fascinating for others.

The pupils all enjoyed the experience, entering the scenarios with gusto and plenty of theatrical licence. They came away from the sessions with a new understanding and basic skills set of how best to react and cope with emergency First Aid situations. The course trainers were complimentary about the pupils’ behaviour and levels of engagement; they were a credit to themselves and the School.
