West Buckland School has won two SILVER Green Apple Awards for Environmental Best Practice, recognised for its Energy Reduction Programme and Whole School Sustainability approach at a ceremony in the House of Lords.

WEST BUCKLAND SCHOOL have won two SILVER Environment Awards in the international campaign to find the greenest individuals, companies, councils and communities. They competed against more than 1000 other nominations in the Green Apple Awards for Environmental Best Practice with their projects “West Buckland School - Energy Reduction Programme” and “Sustainability in Education - Whole School Approach”.

They were presented with their trophies and certificates at a glittering presentation ceremony hosted by Phil Williams at the House of Lords, Westminster Palace, London on November 17th, 2025.

The judges commented:

“A school estate swapped fossil fuels for cleaner energy at scale. Ten biomass boilers now heat buildings, oil use has plunged, and eight hundred and eighty-eight ground-mounted solar panels provide on-site power. All new projects follow rigorous energy-efficient design principles. The result is a dramatic cut in emissions, lower running costs, and warm, well-lit learning spaces powered by nature.”

“West Buckland School placed sustainability at the heart of learning and operations. The campus gained solar generation, tighter energy use, food-waste monitoring and stronger recycling. Students formed an environmental and biodiversity society, won the Eco-Schools Green Flag with distinction, and staged a Green Futures Day and summer festival. Governance matched the ambition, with plans, training and annual events driving continuous progress.”

As a result of this Green Apple Award success, they have been invited to have their winning papers published in The Green Book, the leading international work of reference on environmental best practice, so that others around the world can follow their example and learn from their achievement. They could also progress to represent their country in the Green World Awards 2026 and have 100 trees planted in their name as part of the United Nations Billion Trees initiative.

The Green Apple Awards began in 1994 and have become established as the country’s major recognition for environmental endeavour among companies, councils, communities and countries.

The awards are organised by The Green Organisation - an international, independent, non-political, non-profit environment group dedicated to recognising, rewarding and promoting environmental best practice around the world. The Green Apple Awards are supported by the Environment Agency, the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, the Chartered Institution for Wastes Management, REHIS and other independent bodies.
