Chicken Club

Chicken Club launched at the start of the Autumn term at Spring Grove with the arrival of an Eglu and three chickens. The first priority, after settling the chickens into their new home, was to name them! A school-wide competition yielded a wide range of names including Pom-pom, Heggety, Nugget, Disco, Fluff Puff, Jane Aust-hen and Princess Lay-la and Marshmallow. The winners (picked out of a hat) were Rosemary, Doodle and Daisy.

The children have been learning all about chickens from some of our very knowledgeable parents from both farming and veterinary backgrounds - about chicken behaviour, and how to keep them fit and healthy—very useful information especially for the members of our chicken club! They have also been collecting lots of eggs, although the avian flu restrictions mean they cannot currently sell them.
