Visit to the Houses of Parliament
In November, the Year 5 children at Spring Grove enjoyed a fantastic visit to the Houses of Parliament, with a guided tour exploring the House of Commons, and the House of Lords, as well as key historic spaces including the Lobby and Westminster Hall. They sat in on a live debate in the House of Commons before taking part in an interactive workshop to learn how a bill becomes a law.
This is what they learned: "First, lots of people vote for who they want to be their MP. Then, the M.P writes a baby bill which is discussed by the MPs in the House of Commons who decide if it would be a good law to have. Next, if the House of Commons think it's good, they will send it to the House of Lords. If they don't like it, they send it back to the House of Commons and it can end in a ping-pong for a while until they both agree. Finally, the Lords send it to the King who signs the bill and it becomes a law."
The day was rounded off with a visit to Pizza Express before getting the train back to Kent - a brilliant outing for our Year 5s!
