Our Drama and Music Departments recently captivated audiences with a sensational production of the cult classic musical Little Shop of Horrors. Performed in our state-of-the-art theatre, the show brought the quirky, darkly comedic tale to life with energy, talent, and a touch of theatrical magic.

Set in the gritty streets of Skid Row, Little Shop of Horrors tells the story of Seymour, a shy florist’s assistant who discovers a mysterious plant with a voracious appetite for blood, and eventually, people. As the plant, Audrey II, grows larger and more demanding, Seymour’s rise to fame comes at a terrifying cost. The musical, with its catchy doo-wop-inspired score by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, blends horror, comedy, and romance in a way that has made it a favourite for decades.

From the opening number to the final curtain, the cast delivered a performance brimming with confidence and charisma. The role of Seymour was portrayed by Lawrence in Upper Sixth with heartfelt sincerity and strong vocal control, capturing the character’s journey from timid underdog to desperate man caught in a monstrous bargain. His love interest, Audrey, was brought to life with both vulnerability and charm by Emily in Lower Sixth, her rendition of Suddenly, Seymour a standout moment of emotional depth.

But it was the larger-than-life Audrey II that truly stole the show. Voiced by Elijah in Lower Sixth, and operated by Daniel, Casper and Ethan, our team of skilful stagehands, the plant evolved from a small potted curiosity to an enormous, puppeteered monster, complete with booming voice. The technical team deserves special praise for their seamless integration of lighting, sound, and puppetry, creating a truly immersive experience.

A standout performance came from Upper Sixth student Joe, who delivered a scene-stealing portrayal of the sadistic dentist, Orin Scrivello. Dressed in a sharp leather jacket and wielding a terrifyingly oversized drill, Joe embraced the role with energy and dark comic flair. Despite the character’s villainy, Joe’s confident stage presence and impeccable timing earned him some of the biggest laughs of the night.

The ensemble cast shone throughout, particularly the trio of street urchins, Crystal, Ronnie, and Cedric, who served as a sassy chorus, guiding the audience through the story with tight harmonies and sharp choreography.

Equally impressive was the production’s attention to detail. The set design transformed the stage into a convincing 1960s urban landscape, complete with a fully functional flower shop. Costumes were period-perfect, and the band, led by Musical Director and Conductor Mr Wright, delivered a superb performance of the iconic score.

Directors Mr Bateman and Mr Carroll praised the cast and crew for their dedication. ‘One of the greatest joys of directing at Halliford is witnessing students grow both as performers and as people. From the leads learning the vocal demands of an iconic score, to ensemble members shaping the heartbeat of Skid Row, to technicians mastering lighting cues and soundscapes, this has truly been a whole school achievement. Little Shop of Horrors thrives on bold choices, and our cast and crew have embraced every opportunity to push themselves creatively.’

The audience members left the theatre buzzing with excitement. One prospective Year 7 student commented, ‘It was so good, I want to see it again!’
With its blend of humour, horror, and heart, Halliford’s Little Shop of Horrors was not just a school production, it was a professional-calibre performance that showcased the creativity, commitment, and sheer joy of our young performers.
